If you are into pirates, Omiš is the right place for you. It has got everything: a river, a mountain and the sea. At the mouth of the beautiful emerald mountainous river called Cetina (pronounced Tsetina), which we drink here, there were notorious pirates attacking large merchant ships of rich cities such as Split, Kotor, Dubrovnik and Venice, and even papal galleons. They had light, fast boats which would rush into the open sea from the river and fight in sea battles. Throughout the entire 12th and 13th centuries the pirates of Omiš ruled the seas from Omiš to Dubrovnik, and all ships sailing by this small town were forced to pay tribute for a free passage. Otherwise, they would risk engaging in a battle against the ruthless pirates of Omiš in which only few came out the winners.
Since Venice was an oppressor, enemy that occupied Dalmatia, the pirates were not considered muggers, robbers and thieves, but heroes in the just fight against their foes.
Every year on 18th of August there is a reconstruction of the sea battle with Venetians that took place on that day. Make sure not to miss it, it is spectacular.
